Legal Metrology Without Borders: International Experts Analyze the Role of the OIML-CS System in Innovation and Global Trade
With the aim of strengthening the exchange of knowledge and promoting international harmonization in legal metrology, the workshop “Legal Metrology Without Borders: Innovation, Trade, and the Role of OIML-CS” was held, a technical and academic forum that brought together experts from various countries to analyze the impact of metrology on international trade and market confidence.
During the event, organized within the framework of technical activities related to the Certification System of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML-CS), key topics were addressed, including the certification of measuring instruments, cross-border interoperability, and the need to strengthen regulatory systems to facilitate international trade.
The event shed light on how legal metrology contributes to ensuring the accuracy of measurements used in commercial and industrial activities, which is essential for building trust among consumers, manufacturers, and regulatory authorities. In this regard, the OIML-CS Certification System was highlighted as a key tool for harmonizing technical standards and promoting mutual recognition of certificates between countries, thereby reducing technical barriers and facilitating access to international markets.
During the presentations, specialists underscored the importance of international cooperation and the sharing of experiences among metrological authorities, with a view to adopting best practices and strengthening the technical capacities of participating countries. Emphasis was also placed on the role of technological innovation and digitalization as key drivers for modernizing measurement systems and improving the efficiency of conformity assessment processes.
The forum also provided an opportunity to reflect on the challenges that emerging economies face in implementing international standards, highlighting the need to promote technical training, develop metrological infrastructure, and adopt technological tools that ensure reliable and globally comparable measurements.
This academic forum reaffirms Colombia’s commitment to strengthening legal metrology and its active participation in the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), the body that promotes international standards and facilitates mutual recognition of technical evaluations between countries, contributing to economic development and consumer protection.
