As part of the commemoration of the World Consumer Rights Day, the Superintendennce of Industry and Commerce (SIC), in partnership with the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, hosted the International Forum on Dark Patterns in Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection, an academic forum that brought together national and international experts to analyze current challenges in consumer protection in digital environments.
The event, held on March 17, 2026 at the Santiago Páramo Auditorium of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, aimed to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue on the practices known as dark patterns, digital design strategies that can influence or manipulate users decisions when interacting with digital platforms and online services.
During the conference, panelists addressed the impact of these practices on e-commerce and consumer decision-making, highlighting how some digital environments use mechanisms that make it difficult to cancel services, push users to accept unwanted terms, or pressure them into making purchases without clear and adequate information.
The forum also explored the regulatory challenges authorities face in identifying and controlling these practices, as well as the need to strengthen international cooperation and the exchange of experiences among regulatory bodies and academic institutions. It featured the participation of experts from international organizations and academic institutions, who analyzed global trends and best practices aimed at promoting transparency in digital markets.
The event also highlighted the importance of digital literacy and consumer awareness regarding the risks associated with the use of electronic platforms, as well as the role of authorities in promoting safe and trustworthy digital environments.
Through this forum, the Superintendence de Industry adn Commerce reaffirms its commitment to protecting consumer rights and strengthening a digital economy grounded in transparency, trust, and responsible business practices.
