Colombia assumed the Presidency of the Ibero-American Network of Personal Data Protection

Colombia, through the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, in its role as National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data, was elected President of the RIPD for the period 2021-2022, by the authorities involved in said network and by unanimous decision. The Ibero-American Network of Personal Data Protection (RIPD) is a cooperation forum that integrates public and private sectors that develop initiatives and projects related to data protection.

The RIPD was created in 2003 and is currently composed of 34 organizations. Sixteen of them are the data protection authorities of Mexico, Andorra, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Portugal, and 18 are observers, including the Organization of American States (OEA), the European Data Protection Supervisor, the Consultative Committee of Convention 108 of the Council of Europe, among others.

In addition, the RIPD represents an effort of cooperation between data protection authorities to carry out high-impact investigations into possible violations of the rights of individuals with respect to the collection, use, circulation, and processing of their personal data.

The Presidency will be assumed by the Deputy Superintendent of Data Protection, Nelson Remolina, who in this regard has been imposing over 140 fines in the last 2 years, valued at more than 14 billion Colombian pesos.
