Colombia and China Strengthen Ties in Metrology with the Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding
The Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (SIC) of Colombia and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) of China signed a cooperation agreement in metrology in Bogotá on March 17, 2026.
The Superintendent of Industry and Commerce, Cielo Elainne Rusinque Urrego, and the Vice Minister of the State Administration for Market Regulation of the People’s Republic of China (SAMR), Bai Qingyuan, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in the field of metrology. The agreement marks a milestone in bilateral relations between Colombia and China, with the aim of strengthening trade, quality, and competitiveness in both nations.
The Memorandum of Understanding establishes a technical cooperation framework in metrology, the science of measurement, a critical field for ensuring that products in international trade meet quality and safety standards. Through this agreement, both countries commit to exchanging technical information, regulatory experiences, and best practices related to measuring instruments, metrological legislation, and market access.
Key activities outlined in the MOU include: the exchange of publications and technical information on metrology; the implementation of joint projects and programs to strengthen technical capacities; the organization of seminars, training sessions, and study visits; mutual recognition of test results; and collaboration within international bodies in the sector. To coordinate these activities, the parties will establish a Joint Working Group and designate permanent contact points.
The agreement provides for the creation of a bilateral Follow-Up Committee, comprising the SAMR’s Metrology Department and the Legal Metrology Inspection and Oversight Working Group.
