The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, in its role as national authority for the protection of personal data, initiated an official and administrative action in order to establish whether or not Facebook complied with the data protection regime.

The decision to initiate the investigation was taken by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce based on international alerts issued by different data protection agencies and the public information of the alleged security incident that would have resulted in the leak of user data from 533 million accounts of the social network.

This company has approximately 2.7 billion users worldwide, of which almost 30 million are located in Colombia. According to the company itself, more than 100 billion messages are shared daily on its platforms.

This process is in addition to the actions initiated by several international authorities, in order to obtain clear and precise information on the alleged security incident. It should be recalled that the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce currently holds the Presidency of the Ibero-American Network of Data Protection Agencies, which groups 22 authorities in the world.
