The SIC Participated in the XIV OMPI/EPO/OEPM Regional Meeting on Patent Information in Madrid
The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) took part from April 26 to 30, 2026, in the XIV OMPI/EPO/OEPM Regional Meeting of Specialists in Information Technologies and Patent Information Management of Industrial Property Offices of Latin America, held in Madrid, Spain, within the framework of the LATIPAT Project.
The event, jointly organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO), and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM), brought together specialists from the region to address data quality, information exchange, optical character recognition (OCR) technologies, and the strengthening of regional cooperation in the dissemination of Ibero-American patent information.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the evolution and future objectives of the LATIPAT Project, an initiative launched in the early 2000s that consolidates access to millions of patent documents in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Discussions emphasized the importance of structured data, the adoption of new artificial intelligence–based OCR tools, and the establishment of collaborative working tables to improve information flow, resolve inconsistencies, and enhance the technical capacities of participating offices.
The institution was represented by Dr. Jenny Rodríguez González, University Professional, who presented the current status of the Colombian Office, shared its experience in the automated transmission of patent information under the ST.36 standard, and took part in the exchange of good practices and the definition of joint collaborative actions for the region.
Through this participation, the SIC strengthens its regional leadership in patent information management and reaffirms Colombia's commitment to international cooperation and the continuous improvement of data quality in the LATIPAT system.
